Once we added up everything from the security cameras and office computers to the inspection equipment and lighting, it was clear that 35 kVA would comfortably cover the branch, so we chose a silent-canopy Berksan generator built around a Ricardo engine.

During our survey of the branch, we picked an enclosed section of the building with gray walls and a glass facade on one side for the generator, and while we were there we worked out where the exhaust would exit, how air would circulate and which route the cables would take to the panels. Covered in stretch film, its corners capped with blue protectors, the unit arrived at the branch on a crane truck. The crane lifted it from in front of the showroom and set it down at the entrance of the enclosed area, and from there our crew moved it to its installation spot. We ran the exhaust pipe up from the canopy and over toward the facade, and pulled the power cables through a raceway along the wall into the ATS (automatic transfer switch) panel.

Before commissioning, we went through the connections and the control panel settings one by one. Then we cut the utility supply as a test. The unit started by itself and the ATS transferred the load to the generator; once power was restored, the branch went back on the grid. During the load test, the generator ran on the branch's own loads for a while, and voltage and frequency held steady.
